Exploring the Grid Control
Expression Blend can be used to author Silverlight content and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) content. In fact, Expression Blend was created using WPF. In designing user interfaces like the one used in Expression Blend, considerable attention must be paid to reorganizing the interface for various hardware configurations. A successful design is functional and aesthetically appealing even when it is sized up and down, stretched and skewed. Click the restore down button in Expression Blend and drag the bottom-right corner to resize the program. Resize it all the way down until everything collapses, then size it up again. Take note of the elements in the workspace that scale, and the ones that stubbornly refuse to.

1. Choose File > Open Project/Solution and browse to the module03_assets folder. Open Grid-StartFile folder, then double-click the Grid-StartFile solution. The application opens in Expression Blend.
2. In the Objects and Timeline panel, select the LayoutRoot grid. Resize this grid by clicking and dragging the handle in the bottom-right corner. Notice that the rounded corner boxes at the top of the grid are not affected by the re-size.
3. Double-click the LayoutRoot in the Objects and Timeline panel.
4. If you do not see lock icons on the grid, click the Grid mode button in the upper-left of the grid. The tooltip should read “Grid is in Grid layout mode.”
   
   
   
   Double-click on Grid in the Objects and Timeline panel.
   
   
5. The locks on the first and third columns indicate cells in which content should not resize. This lets the center content be liquid while these areas remain more concrete.
6. In the Objects and Timeline panel, locate the grid named Objects_Timeline. Click this grid to select it.
   
   
   
   Double-click on Grid named Objects-Timeline.
   
   
7. Click the unlock icon to lock the first row. Click on the Layout Root, in the Objects and Tineline panel, then click on the handle in the lower-right corner to resize the parent grid. Notice that the locked row does not resize.
   
   
   
   Lock the first row.
