Creating and Editing a Stroke
Your next step will be to remove any stroke that might already be applied to the original rectangle and then clone it for a different stroke effect.

  1. In the Objects and Timeline panel, click the CtrlBG object to make sure it is selected.
  2. If the Properties panel is not visible, choose Window > Properties, In the Properties panel click Stroke, then click the No brush icon. This eliminates any stroke that might have been applied.

You will now clone the CtrlBG object, resize it and apply a stroke to it.

Cloning an Background Object
You can clone an object one of two ways in Expression Blend, in this example you will use simple cut and paste. When you do some further editing in this module, you will clone the hexShape using keyboard controls.

  1. Using the Selection tool, click the CtrlBG object.
  2. Choose Edit > Copy, or Ctrl+C, to copy the object, and then choose Edit > Paste, or Ctrl+V.
It is that easy, as Expression Blend positions the copy of the object exactly on top of itself.
  3. To make it easier to identify this object, go to the Objects and Timeline panel and double-click the CtrlBG_Copy object and type the name smCtrlBG.

Resizing the Object
You will now resize the smCtrlBG.

  1. Make sure that you still have the Selection tool active and click on the smCtrlBG, either on the artboard, or in the Objects and Timeline panel.
You will first resize without adding a modifier key to see how a typical resize function occurs. You will then resize using a combination of modifier keys to see how you can better control a resize.
  2. Click any corner of the smCtrlBG and drag inwards. Notice that object is resized, but not in any precise mode.
  3. Press Ctrl+Z, or Edit > Undo to put the rectangle back to its original size.

Tip: You can press Ctrl+Z to undo multiple steps. Press Ctrl+Shift+Z to redo a step that you may have inadvertently undone.
  4. Now, hold down the Shift+Alt keys simultaneously to resize the smCtrlBG rectangle to about 75% of the original CtrlBG rectangle. Note that by using the Alt+Shift keys the smCtrlBG maintains the same proportions while it transforms to a smaller object.

Object resized with no modifier keys.

    Object Resized with Shift+Alt keys.
