What you’ll learn in this module:

Understanding SketchFlow
Investigating a project
Using the SketchFlow Map

Prototyping with SketchFlow: Module 1

Introducing SketchFlow

SketchFlow is a prototyping feature within Expression Blend 3 that allows anyone to quickly demonstrate ideas, application flows, and screen layouts using hand-drawn components. Completed SketchFlow projects are viewed within a SketchFlow player which allows clients or team members to add feedback in the context of the prototype. SketchFlow projects can either be independent prototypes or converted directly to working applications, thereby shortening development time.

The SketchFlow Workflow
With SketchFlow, designers create application diagrams to represent the interactive flow of an application. A SketchFlow project consists of multiple screens, each one of which can represent a different page or state of an application, website, mobile application, etc. You can think of screens as white boards on which you can scribble, draw, or write, or in which you can use any of Expression Blend’s existing shapes and controls to build a user interface.

Opening a Demo SketchFlow Project
In this module, you open an existing program and navigate through a SketchFlow project.

  1. Make sure that you have Expression Blend 3 with SketchFlow installed on your computer. You can download a trial version at http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/.
  2. Launch Expression Blend 3 and choose File > Open Project/Solution. Navigate to the sketchflow_assets folder and open the folder named module01_assets that is located inside. Open the folder named snowboard_online, then double-click the Expression Blend file named snowboard_online. The project opens in Expression Blend 3.

An existing SketchFlow project for you to examine.

  3. If you do not see the SketchFlow map panel, choose Window > SketchFlow Map. When it appears, click the tab in the SketchFlow Map panel and drag it to the Results panel. When you see a blue border appear, release the mouse. This expands the panel and docks it to the existing Results panel.

Planning the Website
Traditionally, a designer might plan out a website or an application using programs such as Visio or PowerPoint, but here are the differences between them and SketchFlow:

  • SketchFlow prototypes are entirely non-linear. The application flow can be modeled as a complex graph rather than as a linear sequence of slides.
  • You can either draw UI elements or import them from common drawing programs.
  • You can animate your prototype, creating a visual representation of the interaction between the user and the application.
  • You can use the full library of standard UI elements and custom controls, such as Sketch and Wireframe styles.
    * You can create sample data on the fly, easily build data-driven UI, and add styles to your data.
  • You can create interactivity by using built-in behaviors. Behaviors are extensible, making it easy to add custom behaviors to your prototyping Tools panel.
  • Everything you build in SketchFlow is a Silverlight application (or WPF).
  • With SketchFlow prototypes, you can compose screens from other screens, making it easy to design components, templates, backgrounds, and other re-usable elements.
  • Reviewers can annotate SketchFlow prototypes while they are running, and the review feedback can be passed back to the designers working on the prototype.

Essentially, SketchFlow is a tool that makes it easy to sketch out a conceptual application. To start the process, you can just create a series of screens and draw on them. As your idea progresses, you can make any part of your prototype become as close to the finished product as it needs to be in order to communicate the design idea.
