Comparing Between Baseline and Comparison Browsers
You’ll begin this module in Expression Web 3, with a finished web page that you’d like to preview in multiple browsers.

  1. Choose File > Display in SuperPreview.
  2. In the Baseline area, confirm that your baseline browser (or the browser that you’d like to compare to) is set to Internet Explorer 8. If necessary, click the Close button to clear any other browser that may be selected and then choose IE8 as a baseline browser.
  3. To compare this preview with other browsers, first use the Zoom pull-down menu from the toolbar to zoom out to 62% so you can see the entire page clearly by typing 62 in the Zoom text field and pressing Enter on your keyboard.
  4. In the Comparison area, confirm that your comparison browser options are currently set to Firefox 3.5, Internet Explorer 8-7, and Internet Explorer 6.

  5. The Firefox preview is shown by default in the comparison screen (if the Firefox icon is not highlighted click it now). Examine the two pages by using the scroll bars as needed to examine the layout. As there are no major differences between this preview and the baseline, remove Firefox from the Comparison area by clicking the Close button.
You are now comparing Internet Explorer 8 on the left, with Internet Explorer 8-7 on the right. Zoom out to 50% and look at the paragraph text in the FAQ section (in the center of each screen). You should immediately see a problem with the Internet Explorer 8-7 version. The paragraphs in the FAQ section are not wrapping around the links to their left as desired.

The IE8 paragraph text is wrapping correctly, the IE7 text is not.

You’ll now compare the baseline (IE8) with Internet Explorer 6 to see if the same problem exists.
  6. In the Comparison area, click the button for Internet Explorer 6.
The original text-wrapping problem seen in IE7 still exists, but if you zoom out or scroll down to see the bottom of the page, you’ll now also see an issue with the spacing at the end of the FAQ paragraph. You can see this more easily if you toggle between Internet Explorer 8-7 and Internet Explorer 6 in the Comparison area.

Click between the two icons quickly to visually spot differences.

Now that you know that there are two problems (that may or may not be related). You’ll want to tackle the differences between 7 and 8 first, and then address the issues with other browsers afterward. Again, the logic here is that there are more instances of users using the newer IE7 rather than the older IE6, therefore the urgency to fix issues between IE8 and IE7 is greater than IE8 and IE6.
