Inserting Silverlight content with Expression Web 3: Module 6

Using Expression Web’s Publishing Feature to Deploy Your Web Site

In this module, you’ll learn how to set your publishing settings in order to use Expression Web’s built in file transfer feature.

Defining a Site in Expression Web
You’ll begin this module by defining a site in Expression Web 3.

Important! This module relies on a connection to an FTP server. For this reason, it will not be possible to duplicate these steps without an Internet/connection and/or a remote server with which to work with. Additionally, remote file servers and Web hosting companies often have slightly different protocols than those found in this module. For best results, contact your hosting company or IT department for details concerning your particular network setup

  1. Open Expression Web 3 and, from the Site menu in Expression Web, choose Open Site.
  2. In the Open Site window that appears, click the Browse button.
  3. Navigate to the 06_Using_ExpressionWebs_ftp_feature_to_deploy_your_sitefolder. Click Open, and click Open again.

Setting a Publishing Destination
The first step in publishing files is to set the publishing destination. There are several ways to manage your publishing destination.

  1. Choose Site > Site Settings to open this window.

  2. In the Publishing Destinations section, click Add and the connection Settings Window appears. In the Connection Settings dialog box, type the Name of the site: Lucerne. This name can be arbitrary, but it should have some relevance to your project.

  3. Next choose a Connection type, as noted earlier, your server setup may differ. If possible, choose the SFTP option which provides a more secure transfer (however not all servers support this option). In our case, we chose FTP.
  4. In the Location box, type the Internet address, including the protocol, of the publishing destination that you want to publish folders and files to (for example, ftp://www.example.com). Type the directory for the web root if known; on many servers this field is optional.
  5. For all connection types except File System, type the User name and Password of an account that has permission to publish to the location. If you do not have this information, you will need to obtain it from the administrator of this server.
  6. For FTP, SFTP, and FTPS connections, leave the number of simultaneous connections set to 4. This setting can significantly reduce publishing time.\
Note: Check with your hosting provider before configuring this setting. Many providers limit the number of simultaneous connections. If you exceed that number, publishing speed may be reduced.
  7. For FTP, SFTP, and FTPS connections, choose whether to Use Passive FTP. Some network configurations will work only with passive FTP mode turned on; others will work only with passive FTP mode turned off. Most network configurations will support both modes. The passive FTP mode is considered more secure.
  8. Click Add when done.
