Adding an Opening Animation to Your Game
You will now create an Animation that will be triggered when the game is first loaded. The animation will consist of Text with instructions telling the player how to start the game.

  1. Click the Textbox in the toolbar, then click and drag to add the Text Box.
  2. In the Color Editor, choose a bright green color in order to make the text stand out.
  3. In the text section Change the font size to 24 and then type Click Ball to Begin.
  4. Click the Paragraph tab and set alignment to Center.

  5. Click the Selection Tool and select the TextBlock. Reposition it as necessary and then in the Properties panel, set the Visibility value to Collapsed.

This last step is necessary because you are setting the default state of your animation here in the main screen. Now you will create the Storyboard that creates a pulsating fade in and fade out of the text.
  6. Choose Window > Workspace > Animation, then in the Objects and Timeline window, click the plus sign to create a new Storyboard. In the Create Storyboard resource window that appears, type GameBegin. Then click OK.
  7. The timeline for this Storyboard is now activated and you will begin to create your animation. Click and drag the yellow marker slightly to the right, it doesn’t need to be more than a fraction on a second because all you are doing is turning the textbox back on. You will see a red border around the artboard, this signifies that all changes you make to the screen will be recorded.

  8. In the Appearance panel, change Visibility back to Visible. You see a keyframe (in the shape of an Oval) appear in your timeline. Keyframes represent a change of some sort; in this case, the visibility of the textbox has changed from collapsed to visible. This change has been recorded as a keyframe.
  9. Without moving the marker, change the Opacity from 100% to 0%. This might seem strange because you are making the text invisible again, but it demonstrates an important difference between collapsed and opacity.
  10. Click and drag the marker to the 1 second mark and change the opacity to 100%. Then drag the yellow marker to the 2 second mark and change the opacity to 0%.
  11. This will create a simple animation that fades the text in and out. Because you want this to loop indefinitely until the user starts the game, you have to instruct the Storyboard to do so.
Click the Storyboard name in the Objects and Timeline panel, then in the Common Properties section of the Properties panel, click the RepeatBehavior menu and choose Forever.

  12. At the top of the Timeline Panel are a set of time controls, press the Play button to see the animation. You will see one instance of the animation, but not the repeating behavior. This is because this behavior is not apparent until you see the animation in the built application.
  13. To the right of the Storyboard name is a small X, click this to close the storyboard and return to the mainpage screen.
